Pancaritat in the cave of Sant Martí

Alcúdia

Sanctuary or destination point

The cave of Sant Martí is located at the foot of the hill of the same name (266m), on its southeastern slope, next to the Ma-3470 road and within the Son Sant Martí estate. This cavity is probably one of the founding sites of Christianity in Mallorca and it is believed that the first Christians in the nearby Roman city of Pol·lentia would have used it as a place of worship, perhaps clandestine. It is documented in 1268 and there are significant architectural remains, some of medieval origin: semicircular arches and two altars, one dedicated to Saint Martin and the other to Saint George, located under a cross vault. There are also high stone reliefs. The complex belongs to the bishopric of Mallorca and is usually closed to the public.
